Days in a HOUSE!!

Last week we were blessed with the opportunity to stay at the mission house of Heritage Baptist Church.
Dad & Mitchell flew home Monday & began the flight back to Georgia on Wednesday. Unfortunately they had plane trouble and ended up staying in Chicago overnight and finally arriving back with us on Thursday morning. Thankfully they made it in time for our concert-we were not excited about the thought of doing it w/o them!
Saw this sweet sight one morning as I was walking past the open bedroom door.
my parents have greatly encouraged us children to establish the habit of daily personal Bible reading. This got established with us older ones and by the time the younger ones came along their main reason for wanting to learn how to read was so they could join us older ones in Bible reading each morning. So precious.

music practice…mom gave prizes over the three days there for the most schoolwork accomplished & the most music practiced. With our Bontrager competitiveness there was music going, and schoolbooks out, CONSTANTLY!
We’ve been working on teaching our guys more housekeeping skills.
They are doing a great job and are well on their way to being able to, in a pinch, be proficient bachelors. =)
(none of them feel the calling of bachelorhood, though. =))

  1. Hi Bontragers,
I was wondering how you get all that schoolwork done on the road. We sometimes have trouble getting our homeschool done on "normal" busy days here. LOL. Can I ask, do you use all written or is some online while you travel? Also, any good "old" history books you use? We use ATI Wisdom books and have great ideas for other reading, but we're always looking for more wonderful reading. Lastly, I notice you have a left-hander in your family. I am a lefty and that slows me down with sharing instruments. Does your lefthander play his instruments like a right hander? Just curious.

  2. Oh wow, I bet you were totally excited about staying at a HOUSE all to yourselves!!! Get caught up on laundry and everything else!! We are getting so excited that it is ONLY a couple more weeks till YOU GET HOME!!! yay!!! Have a great day guys, Mary Ebersole

  3. Hi Sheri!

When we started traveling we the schoolwork was a HUGE challenge! We had to work on it till we found what worked, though, because we can't just not do school when we travel! These days, my mother gives the younger children assignments which are usually supposed to completed before they play. Mother usually starts the younger children's school day by having a time where she teaches them character/Bible/music. Then they go on to working on their other subjects, with help if needed. The highschool students are self-motivated with their school. We mostly use books- Abeka, Math-U-See, etc. We do use sometimes use dvd's for some of our science, history, etc. The school children love to play educational games on the iPad. THey usually are allowed to do some of these once their "book assignments" are completed.

As far as favorite books, we have many!!! We are a family of bookworms! Your question gave me an idea…..I think I will just do a blog post on some of our favorite reads!

Taylor plays bass guitar and banjo right handed. He doesn't seem to have any problem! I believe you can get guitars and such specifically for leftys.

    blessings,
    Allison

  4. I LOVE your pictures. We're having a practice competition at our house right now. It doesn't always work, but definitely improves the practice time! I especially like the picture of the boys reading their Bibles.

  5. Thanks for your sweet response, Allison. I'll be looking forward to a blog post on your favorite books. 😉 Most of the wonderful books we've read, which are full of great character examples, have come from other families sharing as well, for which we are so grateful.

  6. Hello to all of the Bontrager's,
Somedays at our house getting school done is kinda hard. Somedays I can't seem to stay focus.
