Enjoying the Beautiful Weather

Hello!  Earlier this week most of the children and I spent the morning outdoors planting, tilling, weeding, playing, and soaking up the sunshine on a lovely, warm, spring day.
I spent my time planting vegetables.  Gardening is on the top of my list of favorite ways to spend a spring/summer morning.  One of the boys asked Marlin the other day what he loved to do and Marlin proceeded to tell him that it was his work that was his play; he finds great pleasure in planting and harvesting his crops, in seeing a heifer calve, and in doing the everyday jobs of life as a farmer.  I agree with Marlin that my work is sometimes my play.  There are few jobs that bring as much fulfillment as preparing the soil, planting the seed, nurturing it, and then enjoying the fruit of my labors.  The benefits of gardening are many:  1.  I often get to work with my children while I am gardening.  2.  I get to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and fresh air.  3.  The garden produce that my family eats from the garden is the best source of nutrition in the world, plus it is the most economical!!  4.  And to top it all off, working in the garden is good for my gut; it is the source of great bacteria.
This summer I gave little garden plots to Taylor, Denver, and Hudson.  They each chose some veggies and flowers that they wanted to plant; then we carefully planned where to put each seed and plant.  It was fun to see their creativity.  Elizabeth wanted flowers and veggies but the boys stuck with just food.  Hm-m-m-m-m, their older brothers spend a lot of time thinking about food, too.
I’ve also changed some of the way I’ve been gardening by planting wide (6-12 inch) rows of veggies like lettuce, spinach, carrots, radishes, and beets.  The onions I plant in double rows about 1 inch apart.  This maximizes my garden space and also cuts down on weed population.
So there are my thoughts about gardening and now here are Chelsy’s wonderful pictures:

We are counting the days until these pretty white flowers with delicate yellow centers turn into luscious, red strawberries!

Rebecca has discovered the joy of playing in the sandbox this spring.  She loves to pour sand from one container to the other.  And no, not all of it stays in the sandbox!

What would we do without our laundry queen, Chelsy?  On a sunny, breezy day like this she finds great pleasure in hanging our laundry out and carefully folding it.

Carson is the man we call on when we need one of gardens tilled.  This morning he tilled in 5 different gardens for over 2 hours.  Thank-you, Carson.

Allison has spent many happy hours in the flower gardens this spring as she digs, replants, scatters seeds, plants annuals, and waters the new plants.

Chelsy is so diligent in making our herb garden beautiful again and planting tasty culinary herbs such as basil, oregano, dill, sage, cilantro, and parsley.

If you want a bountiful crop of strawberries  you have to keep them weeded, right Denver and Taylor?

Not everyone was working!!

Hudson and Elizabeth really are best friends, most of the time.:)

There is always one who is taking it easy.

“For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it to bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall My Word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
~Isaiah 55:10-11
