Joshua’s September Trip to Washington DC

In September, I (Josh) enjoyed a brief trip to Washington, D.C. with my pastor, assistant pastor, and a few of the young guys from our church. Also pictured with us above is another friend from our church who is a traveling evangelist and was there as well.
We participated in a conference held there, entitled “Capitol Connection Next Generation.” During our time in DC, we got to meet with and hear from elected officials, tour DC, and hear inspiring messages on the Christian life.

Hearing from several elected officials and other notables in the Capitol Visitor Center.

In front of the Lincoln Memorial, with the Washington Monument gracing the skyline behind us.

I really enjoyed hearing from Dr. Harding (pictured right). He has lived in DC most of his life and is incredibly well-versed in the Bible, the Constitution, and history. He led us on tours of many of the historical monuments and memorials of DC, as well as the Capitol building.

Here is part of our group at the Lincoln Memorial with Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address directly behind us.

My pastor and I enjoying fresh goodness at Krispy Kreme!

After the conference ended, we ventured on a midnight excursion around DC. We visited the Washington Monument, the White House (sadly, we only saw it from the outside, not the inside :(), the Iwo Jima Memorial, and lastly, McDonalds. 🙂

I was touched by this inspiring quote from the plaque on the Iwo Jima Memorial.

The Washington Monument is an incredible place to visit at night! Here we are with the lighting in front of the Monument casting its erie shadows upon our group.

During my time in DC I was especially touched to witness the Christian Heritage of our nation. The quotes of our founders, our Declaration of Independence, and many of the monuments in DC are replete with references to Almighty God and bear witness to the fact that we were founded uniquely as a Christian nation.

Though Christianity seems to slipping in America, now is the time when all Christians must stand for truth and shine the light of Christ in a culture that so desperately needs the light. If we all are faithful where God has called us, we can make an impact for Christ in this godless society. Whether this country turns back to God or whether it continues to sink to lower levels of debauchery, our mission remains the same. As John Quincy Adams said, “Duty is ours; results belong to God.”

Here are some thought-provoking thoughts from several of the founders:

“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.”              —Patrick Henry

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God?”
-Thomas Jefferson

“While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.”
 -George Washington

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
-Psalm 33:12

  1. Thank you for sharing this, Joshua. I pray that we as Christians do our part, and leave the results up to the Lord. May we humble ourselves and repent and turn from our wicked ways, and may He heal our land!
    God bless!
