Wisdom is The Principle Thing
With so much confusion, fear, and chaos resulting from the pandemic that we find ourselves in, we all desperately need wisdom. God’s Word tells us how to gain wisdom in Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
I want to share with you an excellent resource we have used which has helped our children to learn wisdom-the National Bible Bee. If you have been reading our blog for very long, you know that our 6 youngest children have all been participants in this Bible memory competition for 4 or more years. What you may not know is that the Bible Bee is much, much more than just a competition. In fact, we have found that the Discovery Journal used in the Bible Bee’s Summer Study is one of the best resources we know for teaching your children to know how to study, memorize, and love God’s Word. In this excellent study guide, young people ages 7-18 are taught to study context, cross references, Greek and Hebrew words, and more. As our children study, we have seen them learn to love God’s Word as they memorize and apply what they have learned. But by far the greatest benefit of Bible Bee has been watching our children grow in the fear of the Lord as they have invested countless hours in studying and memorizing the Scriptures.
You can register your children so they can take the National Qualifying test at the end of the study in August or you can simply purchase the Discovery Journal and do this study together for 10 weeks. In only 20 minutes a day, you can study and memorize God’s Word with your children or they can study independently. With the cost of the Discovery Journal and about 20 minutes a day, you can make an investment that could bring a most wonderful return……wise sons and daughters.
For those of you who want support and/or more interaction, there is an option to sign up with a host family. (Because of our family’s travel schedule, we have not been part of a local host group for most of our years of Bible Bee participation.)
I asked 3 of our sons to tell you the difference Bible Bee has made in their lives.
The Bible Bee gave me the tools to study Scripture and to memorize more than I ever thought was possible. The Bible Bee showed me what could be accomplished with a little discipline and self-motivation. Most importantly, the Bible Bee fostered within me a passion to treasure God and HIs Word above all else, and to strive to reflect His reality in every facet of life. The Bible Bee was life changing, not simply because it was a competition but because it better prepared me for the real event-life. I can’t think of a better way you could invest your time and energy this summer than to sign up for the National Bible Bee!
The National Bible Bee was a tremendous blessing in my life! God used it specifically to teach me two important lessons. 1. The inestimable value of God’s Word. His Word truly is precious. Until you spend large amounts of time studying it, you will not realize the true importance of the Bible. The Bible Bee encouraged me to spend hours in God’s Word, and through this it taught me the blessing of God’s Word. 2. The value of discipline. The Bible Bee challenged me to spend time in God’s Word even when I was tired of it. I learned to study even when I was no longer enjoying it. Praise the Lord for the Bible Bee.
Though my season as a competitor in the Bible Bee has come to a close, I am still reaping the rewards of the time that I spent studying God’s Word. While competing in the Bible Bee gave me a greater knowledge and understanding of God’s Word, far greater was the knowledge and understanding of how to study the Bible. Moreover, the Bible Bee helped develop in my heart a deeper love for the scriptures. Those few brief years of intense study were but a start to understanding the vast wealth of wisdom contained in God’s Word; however, because I learned to love and study the Bible for myself, my life has been and will continue to be changed as I dig into the living and powerful Word of God.

Proverbs 4:7 -9 “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.”
Psalm 119:97-102 “Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.”
